Friday Roundup
Starting something new today. Every Friday, I'll be posting a few links of cool things from the week for you to check out over the weekend. Sometimes there'll be a lot of them, sometimes only 1 or 2. Let me know what you think:
Lil' Wayne - "Stuntin' Like My Daddy (Quarterbar Fast Remix)"
There are THOUSANDS of Lil' Wayne remixes all over the internet, I'm aware of this, and I've heard what must be hundreds of them at this point. That being said, this remix is BY FAR my favorite. Quarterbar is one half of the California duo Meanest Man Contest. They've gradually been releasing songs via RCRDLBL.com to populate a digital EP called Partially Smart. They've just released the final song. You can check out that, and a bunch of other Meanest Man Contest stuff right here. Also, Quarterbar himself has a great mix CD called Quarterbar's Shock 'Em Dead! that you can get on CD for $5, or a digital download for ONLY TWO DOLLARS right here. This Lil' Wayne remix appears on that mix

Add N To X - "Take Me To Your Leader"
Another re-post from the original Bomarr Blog from a few years back. Still one of my favorites. They broke up, but their moogy synth psych rock continues on. I recently learned that the female member, Ann Shenton has a new project called Large Number.

Pedestrian - "O Hallelujah" (Bomarr Re-do)
A new take on Pedestrian's "Oh Hosanna" from his unIndian Songs Vol. 1 release. Most of the vocals were re-written and re-recorded, and the music is completely different than the original album version. All music (guitars, drums, loops, samples) courtesy of yours truly, except for a brief accordion appearance from Matt Harrison. This is a re-do/remix/revamp in 9 parts.

Discovery - "Swing Tree"
I'm not going to lie, I'm really enjoying this record. Discovery consists of one guy from Vampire Weekend (again, I'm not going to lie, I really enjoyed that record too), and one guy from Ra Ra Riot, who I still haven't heard. The whole record has sort of a poppy Hot Chip vibe to it, and as cliche as it sounds, there's a great cover of The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back". Definitely check out the record if you like this song.

Superargo - "Miniperformer"
Superargo is Adam Jeffers. Adam Jeffers is from Lawrence, KS. He makes mostly upbeat, mostly 8-bit sounding electronic music that you can dance to. He is also known to put on a great live show, although recent changes have forced him to not play shows for a while while he works on his new record, and fine tunes a new live performance. I'm REALLY looking forward to his new record, whenever that may be. He was nice enough to contribute a track to the Sneakmove Minicomp Vol. 3 that I curated, and he also contributed a remix of my track "Happy Slapping" (see above) for my free Scraps release. The song "Miniperformer" can be found on his self-titled album from around 2003. I'm not sure where you can find his first record these days. Maybe he should put it online as a free download (hint, hint).

The Little Dabs - "E.T. (Every Time)"
The Little Dabs were two boys aged 4 and 6 from Philadelphia. Their father, Russell Dabney, was the drummer in a band called Gypsy Lane, back-up band for such bumpin' acts as the Village People and Instant Funk. This song was a #1 hit in Canada in the 80's. It's catchy as hell.

Edmond LePrince - "Tout"
Edmond Leprince runs a really great electronic music label in France called Ego Twister. He's put out a couple of great compilations called Party Ruiners (with very impressive packaging, I might add). And even though he looks like he'll punch you in the teeth in the above picture, he's a really nice guy. He did a really great remix of our Restiform Bodies track "Panic Shopper", which should be seeing the light of day soon. Keep an eye on this label. They haven't put out a lot of stuff, but everything that's out there is great. I'm highly anticipating more releases from Ego Twister in 2010.

Books On Tape - "Circus Animal Battle Rap"
From his 2003 release Books On Tape Sings The Blues. Southern California's Todd Drootin never fails when it comes to getting people to dance their asses off to his crazy style of jittery electronic dancey, punky jams. It's always interesting to watch him perform live, where he bounces around behind his setup, and enthusiastically punches his equipment, dropping effects in and out with true passion.

Clutchy Hopkins - "3:02"
A mysterious cloud hangs over all things Clutchy. The man released The Life of Clutchy Hopkins out of the blue via Ubiquity Records back in 2006, and to this day, he has still remained anonymous. There's somewhat of a cult following for this man, largely in part because of the mystique surrounding him, but also in part to the quality of all the music he's released to date ...including Walking Backwards, Music Is My Medicine, Clutch of the Tiger (with Shawn Lee), and the lesser-known The Misled Children Meet Odean Pope. People have speculated that he is none other than DJ Shadow, or maybe Cut Chemist, or maybe even one of the Beastie Boys. Clutchy's bio claims that he is a middle-aged man, former close friend of Moondog, who lives in a cave in the Mojave desert. It's a really fasinating world to get wrapped up in. Do a google search and see for yourself. This site has some great info about him, and it's a great place to start. Check out his Misled Children releases here and here

Pivot - "Fool In Rain" / "Furious No Furious"
pivot - "furious no furious" (stream)
from ilikemusic.com:
"Pivot are a rare combination of the emotive and cerebral, harnessing the raw garage energy of three explosive musicians along side intensive studio production. Part prog-warrior, part slacker-geek, their music and approach provide something much needed in a world of nowhere music (being listened to in nowhere bars), Equally influenced by synthesizer luminaries Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre, Warp label mates Autechre and the post-punk new wave of Talking Heads, Pivot's Warp album debut O Soundtrack My Heart exudes an omnipresent sense of melodrama and what can only be described as a sort of 'apocalyptic joy'."

AA - "Society Stinks"
AA - "Society Stinks" (stream only)
Softspot music is proud to present its flagship release, a limited reissue of the Essential Entertainment EP by Belgian band AA. Originally released in 1981 by Sexy Robot Records and limited to 900 copies, Essential Entertainment is an unrecognized gem of the early post-punk era. A unique and compelling sense of restless dread and frustration emanates from their stuttering grooves, spiky guitar arpeggios, and disturbed mutter-to-shout vocals. The music is clearly inspired by its peers: Joy Division, the Fall, and label mates the Cultural Decay. Essential Entertainment was AA's first and only release. Softspot will be releasing a limited pressing of 500 copies."

New Telephone Jim Jesus Track!!!!
BOMARR BLOG EXCLUSIVE!
Telephone Jim Jesus has been kind enough to give me this brand new track (co-produced by Bud Behrning of Furious Stylz/Skyrider). All I can say is this track is SLAMMING. I can't get enough of it. This is really making me anxious for some new TJJ/Furious Stylz material. There's a new Telephone Jim Jesus record and a new Furious Stylz record in the works (for those who don't know, Furious Stylz is Jim Jesus + Bud & John of Skyrider). They have a free EP that you can download to hold you over right here.

Snowy Red - "Madman"
Snowy Red was the one-man electronic band of the former Chainsaw guitarist, Micky Mike. With the "Vision" LP and some tracks on the "The Beat Is Over" LP, Snowy Red was, for a brief moment only, a band. After the Belgian New Beat boom, Snowy Red called it quits and Micky Mike disappeared, only for the band to resurface again in 2004 as a duo (with a guitarist) at the Belgian Independent Music festival. This track is from the 1982 release "The Right To Die".
(Thanks to my man Rob for the tip)

Flower Travellin Band - "Satori Pt. II"
Some amazing Japanese psych-rock, released on Atlantic records in 1971. Touches of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. This record is HEAVY, and seemingly ahead of its time. Original copies of this on vinyl still go for a good amount of money on eBay. They've since reunited, and released a new record in 2008. It is a vast departure from their earlier sound (the stuff on their official Myspace page doesn't even touch what they were doing years ago). As of right now, this album is not available digitally, and is only available as an import, but you should really check it out. It's pretty incredible.

Bit Meddler - "Dermetfak"
I posted this track on the original Bomarr Blog about 4 years ago, but I recently re-discovered it and figured I'd post it again since most of you weren't following the blog back then. This guy didn't have too many releases, (not even a full length), but the stuff he did release on Planet Mu was high quality stuff. I really wish he'd come out of hiding. I'd love to find out what he's doing now. If anyone has any leads, please let me know. His name is Matt Anderson. I'm curious to see if he's still making music.

Visage - "The Anvil"
I discovered this record in the dollar bin a few years back. I picked it up based on the cover art. It just looked dark and new wavey, so I had to try it out. I put it on the turntable when I got home and lo and behold, it WAS dark and new wavey. I fell in love with this song, and did a bit of research on them. Turns out, Visage has consisted off and on of members of Ultravox (one of my favorites), Magazine, Siouxsie and the Banshees and more. This album also reached #6 on the UK charts when it was released in 1982. It's always great when you can find out something new and amazing while digging for records. I haven't done it for quite some time, but I think I'm going to start again.

T La Rock - "Lyrical King (from the Boogie Down Bronx)"
This record was released in 1987 on Fresh/Sleeping Bag Records. Fresh is known for some of the earlier EPMD releases, while Sleeping Bag Records was founded by avant-garde musician Arthur Russell. This record featured some production from Kurtis Mantronix, as well as some beatboxing from Greg Nice of Nice & Smooth. A true classic hip hop release.

Hangedup - "Klang Klang"
Hangedup is/was a two-piece band from Montreal consisting of Genevieve Heistek of Sackville on viola, and Eric Craven (now of Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra La La Band) on drums and percussion. Most of their stuff is fairly high energy, and very unique stuff. I'm not sure they're around anymore, as they haven't released anything since 2005, but I'd highly recommend any of their records if you're into this type of thing.

Modeselektor - "Sucker Pin"
From their 2007 release Happy Birthday! To be honest, these guys are kind of hit or miss as far as I'm concerned. I have some friends who are in LOVE with this record, and I've listened a few times to see if I was missing something. They definitely grew on me, but I can't say I love the majority of their output. When they're on, they're on though, and this track definitely stands out on this record (as well as their collaboration with Thom Yorke on one of the songs). They just released a new collaboration with Apparat under the name Moderat, which I feel the same way about. Some serious gems on there, but some fairly boring tracks as well. If you like this one though, check the album out for yourself and see what you think.
