The Bomarr Blog Is Moving (F*** Blogger)

The one-year anniversary of the Bomarr Blog being back is next Wednesday, April 14. To celebrate this milestone, I was going to wait until next week to announce that I'm no longer going to put up with Blogger's bullshit, and I'm jumping the gun (my inevitable shutdown) by moving to self-hosting. Unfortunately, I just got yet ANOTHER unnecessary takedown notice from Blogger today, so I'm going to go ahead and let you all know now that The Bomarr Blog will now be located at blog.bomarr.net .

Blogger has been on a rampage as of late, shutting down many great mp3 blogs that are just trying to help promote up-and-coming artists and/or get the word out about music they like. Often times, like myself, offering up links to where the full albums can be purchased. A good portion of the time, they remove content that the blogger actually had PERMISSION to post. I'd understand if I was posting Beatles discographies and things of that nature, but I'm not. I've also done nothing but cooperate with them when things have been taken down, but they still send repeat notices even after I've removed the offending content. When they issue a takedown, they set your post back to "draft" status, which allows you to edit it and re-publish. They clearly say "You may re-publish the posts with the offending content and/or link(s) removed." A while back, they did this for a Yeasayer track I posted, and I removed it immediately. Two weeks later, I got a notice for the same post, even though the link to the "infringing" mp3 was already long gone. This counted as 2 strikes against me. They just did the same thing today for a Tobacco remix of a Health song that I posted last week. On top of that, they even removed a post of a Bassnectar mp3 that I got FROM THE ARTIST. After speaking with Bassnectar, he confirmed that neither he, nor his label or management had anything to do with it.

So, to sum up my rant....Blogger wins. I'm moving. I can't put up with your bullshit anymore and you make it too difficult to contest things, even when you're wrong, so I bid you farewell.

Posting will not be interrupted at all. Everything stays the same aside from the web address. So please, update your bookmarks, find me on Twitter , and come visit me at my new home

Alexander Chen is mostly known for his Boy In Static project, which led him to release music on Markus Acher (The Notwist)'s Alien Transistor label as well as tour around the US opening for 13 & God. This time around, Alexander has shed his Boy In Static persona and taken on a new one, The Consulate General. His debut record Person Number came out yesterday on Circle Into Square records. The record features appearances from members of Slowdive, Montag, Sole & The Skyrider Band and Misha. Alexander also has a new EP coming out next month titled What Time Is It Now, which features remixes from Blue Sky Black Death, Lymbyc System & T.H. White. He also has a really awesome website you can check out below.

The Normal was a short-lived project started by Daniel Miller, founder of the influential Mute label back in the late '70's. Daniel only had a couple of releases under this moniker, primarily this 2-song single, which featured the minimalist classic "Warm Leatherette." Daniel also went on to produce such acts as Depeche Mode, Erasure, Wire and DAF. You can find out even more about him in the amazing Synth Britannia documentary.

France is really taking hold of the electronic music scene. Not that this is anything new, mind you, but these past few years have seen a slew of great music coming out of this particular country. Obviously the likes of Justice and Daft Punk come to mind, but then you have people like Mr. Oizo, Sebastian Tellier, Debmaster, Ego Twister Records, Kavinsky.....basically, too many to name. Fitting in with all this stuff is Acid Washed, a duo from Paris whose influences range from Steve Reich to Giorgio Moroder, DFA Records to Detroit Techno. Their self-titled debut album just dropped yesterday on Record Makers (also home to Kavinsky). Pick it up.

Eroc used to be known as the weirdo drummer for German prog-rockers Gorbschnitt, but then became known on his own for his weird synth and guitar experimentations, like the tracks heard on his self-titled 1975 record that "Norderland" is from. This song in particular sounds like a psychedelic spaghetti western theme, and I can't get enough of it.

Big thanks for Bomarr Blog reader Mike for putting me up on this guy. He hipped me to the UK's Blank Spaces a couple of days ago in response to the Metronomes track I posted. Upon first listen, I assumed this stuff was some lost 80's minimal synth stuff, but it turns out it's quite new. Blank Spaces does what he does, and does it well. All the songs on his MySpace page and Soundcloud page are great. Unfortunately, he has no label, no bio, and no releases are planned for the near future, but keep an eye on this guy. Good things are sure to come.

First off, I have to say that in general, I won't even listen to mixes that people send me as blog submissions. I just don't have the time to listen to hour-long house music or acid jazz dj mixes, so when I saw this submission show up in my email, I ALMOST disregarded it. That is, until I saw that this mix included funk covers of Gary Numan, Mr. Oizo, Radiohead and more. I gave it a shot, and I'm glad I did. These covers are actually really great, drum heavy covers of some already great songs. Great little minimal synth song from Australia's The Metronomes. These guys were mostly active in the 80's, releasing a few singles and albums on the goth-heavy label Cleopatra Records. I used to be really into a lot of the stuff on that label, so I'm amazed that I didn't hear about The Metronomes until recently. These guys are very different than most of the other bands on the label. Really great stuff.

I've been on a bit of an Italo Disco kick lately. While this song might not be for everyone, I think it's incredibly funky and extremely catchy. I'm not really sure what's going on on the album cover...maybe some nude wrestling, perhaps? Easy Going had some hits in the 70's but haven't really been heard from since, aside from select disco compilations. This is quite possibly the longest song I've posted on the blog as well, clocking in at just under 8 minutes.

I haven't been able to dig up much information about Glorious Strangers aside from what the always great Mutant Sounds blog had to say:

"The product of one Wharton Tiers, esteemed NY engineer for the likes of Branca/Swans/Sonic Youth back in the day, here working alongside his wife Carol on vocals, Glorious Strangers being one of two of Wharton's period projects to feature on MS, Jim having posted the 3x7" set by his concurrent outfit Social Climbers some time back. Under the Glorious Strangers guise, he and Carol concoct smirky bon mots of demure quirk akin to Y Pants or Inflatable Boy Clams to vaguely amusing effect."

"Move It Time" is from the impressive compilation New York Noise, Vol. 2, a compilation that showcases some early 80's no wave bands and features the likes of Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca, Jim Jarmusch, Arthur Russell and more. If you like bands like ESG, you might like Glorious Strangers.

I stumbled on Huess on MySpace a while back and really enjoyed what I heard, so it was a nice surprise to see a free MP3 from him appear in my inbox over the weekend. Huess is starting to get a bit of a buzz in the UK beatmaking scene. His cut-and-paste production style is mildly reminiscent of J Dilla, but somehow unique. He has a new EP out called I'd Rather Be The Hunter, and has a vinyl EP coming out soon that features remixes from Fulgeance and Kelpe. Keep an eye out for this guy.

From the compilation Anagram Jam. The guys behind B-Music/Finders Keepers seem to have unearthed some real gems this time around. These seriously hardcore crate-diggers include David Holmes, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Andy Votel and more. This time around, they've put together a compilation credited to Tandy Love & Mad Smooth, which features numerous gems (psych, surf, Turkish, etc) unearthed from who-knows-where. They've made it tricky though, and scrambled around the names of the artists and songs so you have no idea who the artists actually are. You get "bands" like Vandal Cock, Ray Wun, Dizcoa, and so on. Definitely check this out if you're into stuff like this. There are some great songs on here.

Lisfrank was a one-man-band from Italy who was most active in the 80's. Very dark-themed synth, and very good. "Man Without Limits" appeared on last years collection of hard to find Lisfrank tracks called Mask Rewind, an extremely limited vinyl release that came with a limited white vinyl 7". It originally appeared on the highly sought after Mask Productions compilation First Relation back in 1983. If you can track this down, be sure to pick it up.

Julian Shah-Tayler has some experience under his belt. Not only was he a member of Bomarr Blog favorites Whitey, but he recorded an album with Joaquin Phoenix. He's also gotten some praise from David J of Bauhaus. "Wetter" is from his Un Ange Passe EP that he recently released and dedicated to the memory of his friend Christine Shroy-Hull. This little gem of a 7" from 1984 has been recently re-issued as a 12" by Moustache Records out of the Netherlands. Extremely catchy, heavily-Vocoded electro. The new 12" reissue has some alternate edits, as well as the equally as good "5595." To the best of my knowledge, the 12" is currently available via Clone Records, which means it's going to cost you about $40 US to purchase it on vinyl, but if you're just in the mood to own the MP3's, you can pick it up digitally for significantly less over at the Boomkat store. I might have to start saving my pennies.

Yet another artist who has been blowing my mind lately is Mirror People, another project from Portugal's Rui Maia. He got my attention with his really impressive remix of Neon Indian's "Mind,Drips," so I did some research and stumbled on this Kraftwerk-y remix he did for UK band Detachments. Rui counts New Order, Add n to (x), Giorgio Moroder and Suicide as some of his favorites, so how could you NOT like this? He has a bunch of stuff for you to check out over at his Soundcloud page, all of it is really impressive. He also has more music and videos over on his MySpace page.

The guys that make up Javelin (2 cousins from Brooklyn via Rhode Island) have all their bases covered. Not only do they make really impressive head-nodding electronic music, but they have the visual companion to their music down to a tee. Their 12" vinyl packaging usually consists of the word "Javelin" painted onto some else's pre-existing record cover (eg: The Commodores, Simon & Garfunkel, etc), and these 12"s are usually collectors items due to their limited quantities. Right there they gets points for creativity AND recycling. They also perform with stacks of spray-painted boomboxes in front of them. That's another plus. Let's see....they've performed at the MOMA, they named this song right here after a character from Mike Tyson's Punch Out, they're currently on tour with Yeasayer AND they have a new record called No Más coming out next month on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label.

Meet Madness2012 (known to his friends as Justin Delaet). Master beatboxer, prolific MC, and all-around great guy. He's been doing this rap thing for many years now. Back in the day, he appeared on one side of a split cassette single that I put out with some friends. The song was called "Bullshit," and on the flipside was Telephone Jim Jesus's first ever recorded vocal appearance on a song called "Tapeworm." Madness2012 has also recorded songs with Passage (Anticon/Restiform Bodies). He's been putting out records steadily now for a while. His most recent being the Hot Sauce EP, which you can grab right here. "Hang the Way" is from his record The Perfect Words For Saying Nothing. Check him out.

Last year, France's prolific producer/remixer/vocalist Joakim put out an amazing record called Milky Ways on the also-wonderful Tigersushi Records. This year, Tigersushi will be releasing another volume of their More G.DM. compilations. Joakim's labelmates (and all-around great guys) Principles of Geometry offered up their remix services and came up with this great reworking of Joakim's "Ad Me." The compilation will be available soon, so unfortunately I can't give this track away for free, but if you like it, be on the lookout. I really love this stuff. If you're into Grizzly Bear, Washed Out, Final Fantasy, etc, you will most likely love this too.

There doesn't seem to be a detailed bio on them anywhere, but according to Last.fm, Wave Machines are "art rock disco made on a Cash Converter keyboard and start-up drum kit." I'll be honest, a lot of the submissions I get for this blog just don't fit, but every once in a while, something comes through that I absolutely love. Austin's Superlitebike impressed me. This track, "Unbelievable Party!!! Cool" not only impressed me with it's title, but also with the fact that it's an upbeat party track a la LCD Soundsystem. Before Ricky Gervais became a household name due to his brilliant comedic skills and creating the original UK version of The Office, he was part of a little-known early 80's synthpop duo named Seona Dancing (pronounced "Shawna"). They didn't have much success aside from breaking the Billboard top 100 with this song, "Bitter Heart." The man can actually hold his own when it comes to vocals, and proves here that he's just an all around, talented guy.

Think The Minutemen meets Devo. This multimedia-loving San Francisco "synthpunk" band was known in the late 70's-early 80's for their crazy performances, often incorporating instructional films (before it was cliche) into their live sets, and performing in strange places (like in the front window of a San Francisco JC Penney). It was hard to pick a song of theirs to post. Their recently-released collection of songs History of the Units: The Early Years 1977-1983 (released last year by Community Library) is jam packed full of hits that nobody seems to have ever heard. Rumor has it, there's a vinyl version of this coming out as well, which will be amazing to own. If you're into this stuff, please do yourself a favor and pick it up. It's really quite amazing. I wish bands like this were still around.

With a name like Truman Peyote, you're sure to expect some heady, psychedelic shit. They don't disappoint. "New Wife, New Life" is from this Boston area band's formerly-CDR-only-soon-to-be-12inch-vinyl release Light-Lightning. On Light-Lightning, they provide you with some catchy, trippy, lo-fi jams, and will surely be a treat to have on vinyl when it's released. These guys are definitely a band to watch for 2010. Currently, they have upcoming shows with Neon Indian, The Hood Internet, Toro Y Moi & Ear Pwr, to name a few. There's also a 7" split with Turtle Ambulance (and featuring "New Wife, New Life") coming out on Breakfast of Champs Records February 9th.

Yiggy is the brand new FREE release from Tucson's rapper/tattoo artist Isaiah Toothtaker. I'll be completely honest, there's not a lot of new rap coming out these days that I'm too impressed by. I think a lot of it is pretty boring, actually, but every once in a while, someone surprises me and causes me to rethink things a bit. Isaiah is one of them. He's managed to get some really impressive production for this record as well, recruiting his friends Megasoid, Eligh of Living Legends, Subtitle, Eric Steuer of Meanest Man Contest, Meaty Ogre and more. He also gets bonus points for editing footage of my man Tsim Fuckus to create a video for "Bassface." It almost seems wrong to offer something this good for free. Go grab it here.

Another amazing release from French label Tigersushi. Synth enthusiasts Guillaume Grosso and Jeremy Duval enlisted help from Sebastian Tellier, Vast Aire and Hangar 18 for this one. Much more upbeat than their wonderful self-titled debut from 2005. These guys keep getting better and better, constantly working on music and honing their chops doing remixes for the likes of Poni Hoax and Joakim. An early, Vast Aire-less version of their song "Napoleon" appears on the Sneakmove Minicomp 3 7" I curated. At the rate these guys are going, I'm sure the next album is going to be phenomenal.

A.T.B.A.N. Klann (standing for A Tribe Beyond A Nation) was supposed to release their debut album Grass Roots for Eazy-E's Ruthless Records in 1992. Unfortunately, the label shelved the record shortly before it was due to be released, and 3 years later, A.T.B.A.N. Klann were dropped from Ruthless after Eazy-E's death and the record was never released. Fortunately (depending on who you talk to), 2 of the members of the group....Will 1X (now known to everyone as will.i.am) and apl.de.ap, went on to form Black Eyed Peas with the help of their friend Taboo. While this record isn't quite amazing, there are definitely some good songs on here, some in the vein of Black Sheep, and the nth-generation cassette dub quality of the recordings add a bit to the feel of the whole thing. I still think the Black Eyed Peas record Behind The Front was good for its time (although I haven't listened to it in years so I'm not sure how well it holds up), but these guys were much more listenable before Fergie joined the group.

This was a bit of a cult hit when it was released back in 1994. It even had a music video which was directed by a very young Spike Jonze before everyone and their mothers were banging down his door to put visuals to their music. MC 900 ft. Jesus (Mark Griffin) got his name from evangelist Oral Roberts, who had claimed he had a vision of a 900 ft. Jesus that commanded him to build a hospital on the campus of Oral Roberts University. Mark only released 3 official studio albums (2 for Nettwerk, and 1 for Rick Rubin's American Recordings, which this song appears on). While the song is pretty silly, it's a song I've always listened to here and there, just for the nostalgia. Not sure how many of you will even remember this song, but I had to share it.

Portland, Oregon's Cars & Trains (Tom Filepp) has been a very busy man as of late. He spent a good chunk of last month touring with Ceschi & Bleubird to start getting the word out about his upcoming record The Roots, The Leaves (for Ceschi's Fake Four label) and its sister album of remixes, appropriately titled The Roots, The Remix. The Roots, The Remix includes remixes from Boy In Static, Melodium, Dollboy, Meanest Man Contest, Blue Sky Black Death, Big Pauper/PZ, Otem Relik, Unconventional Science, USF, Lullatone, Polyphonic, Bomarr (that's me), and Ernest Gonzales. Fake Four is handling the physical & electronic formats for the album, and Circle Into Square will be releasing the digital-only remix album. In addition to all this stuff (see, I said he's a busy guy), he has a limited edition 7" coming out on Token Recluse featuring Unconventional Science and Pauper/PZ's remixes. I did Volume 3 back in 2007, and said that it would be my last Xmas mix in the series, but after getting inspired, and actually finding an impressive chunk of Xmas-themed music this year, I've decided to do another...maybe even another after this! Great cover of the the end theme from John Carpenter's "Assault on Precinct 13" by German "disco" band The Splash Band. Released in 1984, this stuff is more 80's electro than disco. The Music of John Carpenter features some pretty impressive covers of themes from Starman, Big Trouble in Little China, The Fog, and the extremely impressive covers of Halloween 2 (the other standout track from this release), and Halloween. If you can find this, pick it up. It's hard to come by.

I can't speak highly enough about this compilation that Bay Area producer An-Ten-Nae has put together. There are some incredibly nasty beats on here from the likes of Ooah (Glitch Mob/PANTyRAiD), Marty Party (PANTyRAiD), Adam Freeland, Robot Koch, An-ten-nae himself, and more. I hadn't heard of Opiuo before this compilation, but I did some research and found this amazing EP, which you can name your price on (no minimum), and it blew me away. Keep an eye on all of the artists associated with this compilation, and everything coming out of the Muti Music label, it's all really great stuff, and while you're at it...BUY THIS COMP!!

A little blast from the past on this one. From Hand 'Solo Records' first volume of the Bassments of Bad Men series, released way back in 1996. Sort of a "who's who" of the Halifax hip hop scene at the time. Featuring early appearances from Buck 65, Sixtoo, DJ Moves, Cheklove (Corey from Trailer Park Boys), Hip Club Groove and more. Some funny lines in this one, one that particularly tends to repeat in my head...."Haagen Das Efx Processor, Professor...." Unfortunately, this release is out of print, and not available digitally, but I'm sure you can find one on eBay. Enjoy.

I actually just stumbled on these guys recently. Absolute Body Control was the first significant project of Dirk Ivens and Eric Van Wonterghem, who later went on to be a part of bands like D.A.F. , Dive, Klinik and Sonar. They were mainly active from 1979-1984, but have since re-formed (in 2006) and re-recorded a lot of their classics for a release called WIND(RE)WIND. Their stuff is very much in the Joy Division/Suicide vein, so it's highly recommended if you're a fan of either. Also, keep an eye on the NY label Minimal Wave, who has resurrected a lot of these lost, old synthy gems. They have a well-trained ear for some really classic stuff, and everything they're putting out is quality stuff.

One of their members, George Alexander (born Alexander Young) is brother to Malcolm and Angus Young of AC/DC. These guys strongly resemble the Beatles, but the Beatles themselves actually took interest in them, and Grapefruit's John Perry even appears in the background choir of "Hey Jude." In addition, John Lennon & Paul McCartney co-produced the Grapefruit song "Lullaby for a Lazy Day." Unfortunately, this album is fairly hard to find, but sometimes you can find copies on eBay, although you should expect to pay royally for a copy of this on vinyl.

I have no idea how this music made its way into my iTunes, but while listening to some music, this came on and immediately caught my attention. Turns out to be a "mixtape" (literally a cassette release) called Untitled [deuces] from London's Hounds of Hate and Hype Williams (not THAT Hype Williams), where they took turns appearing on each others' sides of the cassette. To be honest, I'm a bit more into the Hounds of Hate side of the tape than the Hype Williams side, but they're both great. It's all on a sludge-funk-downtempo-instrumental-synth vibe and I love it. Highly recommended if you're a fan of Odd Nosdam or Tobacco. There's a limited 7" split and another mixtape with Hype Williams coming in the near future. You can download side 2 of the mixtape here.

Great new single from Zion I's Amp Live. Amp Live has been getting quite a bit of attention as of late for his Rainydayz Remixes EP (where he used all Radiohead source material from In Rainbows for the beats and got local favorites Del Tha Funkee Homosapien and Too Short to rap over them), as well as a recent remix for Anticon's WHY?. Even Akon & MGMT have approached him for remixes. Be on the lookout for his upcoming record Murder At the Discoteck, coming out on Child's Play in 2010. Another old classic. Money Mark has acted as the Beastie Boys' on-and-off keyboard player over the years, as well as an established solo artist of his own. This record was released in 1995 on Mo' Wax, and features about 30 short little songs that range from experimental tape loop noise, to really amazing little pop songs. He's like a lo-fi Stevie Wonder on this record. I'd highly recommend checking it out.

This song has been a staple on many "mix tapes" I've made for people since this came out in 1996. It's got that head-nodding, yet melodic, poppy feel to it. It's a great song to listen to loud in headphones. Takako Minekawa's love for Kraftwerk, Moog synthesizers, vocoders and Casios is really apparent on this record. Amazingly, as much as I love this record, I've never gone and checked out any of her other releases. After re-visiting this yet again, I'm going to have to. Oh, and she's married to Japanese electronic producer Cornelius.

First off, this music is absolutely NOTHING like the album artwork and band name make it seem. I'd look at this album cover and probably assume this was some sort of alt-country/indie-folk rock record, not some upbeat, poppy, dance-able poppy stuff. This completely caught me off guard, but I guess I should have expected this from a label like Tigersushi, who always seems to come with the goodies. Tigersushi has put out records by Principles of Geometry and Poni Hoax, and pretty much everything that comes out of this label is great. I wanted to post 2 songs from this record, but in fairness to the band, I chose one, and this is the one that has been bouncing around in my head like crazy. NastyNasty has a brand new single called "The Reef" dropping any day now on SF Bay Area label Frite Nite. You can hear "The Reef" in the mix that Starkey did for Fact Magazine here. The single also features a remix from the UK's Slugabed. He also has a new record coming out at the end of the month called Kingdom Come (which "Python Kiss" is from). This guy has been tearing up the charts over at the XLR8R site, so you should hop on this bandwagon before everyone else does so people don't think you're just trying to be cool.

Prinzhorn Dance School is a UK-based duo (trio for live shows) that consists of Tobin Prinz and Suzi Horn. They have released an album and a series of singles on James Murphy's DFA record label. Their music leans toward more minimal/artsy rock as opposed to traditional stylings. An interesting tidbit of info about them...they had a "recycling clause" when they signed with EMI to license their album in the UK which sort of held things up because they wanted to ensure that all their vinyl/cd packaging consist of recycled material. You have to respect that.

First, we have this great "indie rock all stars" posse cut by the North American Hallowe'en Prevention Inc. called "Do They Know It's Hallowe'en?". A satire of the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" This song features everyone who's someone in the indie world, and it's for a good cause. All proceeds from sales of this song go on to benefit UNICEF, so if you feel like being a good samaritan, make your way to iTunes and spend the .99 cents.
